Getting Started with the Timeline

Accessible directly through the main menu, the Timeline serves as your primary progression roadmap in Slay the Spire 2. Think of it as an expansive, visual checklist where every individual node represents a distinct Epoch waiting to be triggered. If you are ever unsure how to move forward, simply hover your cursor over a locked node; the game provides specific instructions regarding the requirements needed to clear it. While many of these nodes are initially obscured by a "fog of war," they will naturally become visible as you spend more time climbing the Spire.

Securing a new Epoch provides permanent enhancements that influence every subsequent playthrough. These rewards are substantial and varied, ranging from fresh card archetypes and unique relics to new potion types, specialized combat events, alternate Act paths, and even entirely new playable heroes. Whenever the "Epoch Discovered" notification appears on your screen, it signifies that you have successfully expanded the game's core content. A major structural improvement in the sequel is the shift toward global tracking. Unlike the original game's character-specific progression, your achievements now contribute to a unified pool. This means a single high-performance run can potentially satisfy the conditions for several Epochs simultaneously, making your time in the Spire much more efficient and rewarding.

Score-Based Epochs

The majority of your early progression is tied directly to the total score you accumulate at the conclusion of each run. This numerical value is calculated based on several performance factors: the number of floors you ascend, the quantity of Elites and Bosses you defeat, the amount of gold you collect, and the number of unique relics you discover during your journey. To maximize your gains, you should aim for "Perfect" victories against Elites and Bosses, as these flawlessly executed encounters grant significant point multipliers that drastically accelerate your progress.

Prioritizing score-based Epochs is the most effective way to broaden your strategic options during the early hours of the game. These specific unlocks typically release the largest batches of new items into the general loot pool. By shifting your mindset away from avoiding difficult encounters and instead pushing for deeper, more aggressive runs, you will quickly see your available deck-building choices explode. Once you have cleared these initial hurdles, the subsequent grind for specific character milestones becomes significantly less daunting. You will have access to a much stronger array of tools and synergies from the very start of each attempt, allowing you to tackle harder challenges with ease.

Character-Specific Milestones: Play the Whole Roster

Slay the Spire 2 currently features a diverse roster of five characters: the Ironclad, the Silent, the Regent, the Necrobinder, and the Defect. Many Epochs are strictly gated behind specific achievements tied to these individual heroes. Your first objective should be to unlock the full cast, which is a relatively rapid process. The progression follows a linear chain where playing one character unlocks the next: completing a run with the Ironclad unlocks the Silent, who then leads to the Regent, followed by the Necrobinder, and finally the Defect.

Once the full roster is available, the most efficient strategy is to rotate between characters rather than focusing exclusively on one. This allows you to simultaneously chip away at milestones such as clearing Act 3, defeating 15 Elites, slaying 15 Bosses, and securing a victory on Ascension 1 for each hero. While this variety might feel like it slows down your progress initially, remember that every action still feeds into your global score. A high-scoring run with your favorite character helps push the shared Timeline forward, while occasional runs with the rest of the cast ensure you are checking off the necessary boxes for character-exclusive unlocks and advanced game modes.

Elite and Boss Kills: The Fast Track to Late Epochs

To accelerate your access to late-game relics and powerful cards without spending dozens of hours grinding, you must adopt an aggressive pathing strategy. Prioritize routes with the highest density of Elite encounters whenever possible. Not only do these fights provide superior rewards and higher scores, but they are also essential for completing the "15 Elites" Epochs required for every character on the roster. Avoiding these fights might make a single run safer, but it ultimately slows down your account-wide progression.

The same logic applies to Boss encounters. Avoid the temptation to use map rerolls to dodge intimidating bosses; instead, confront them head-on to build your kill count. The game effectively rewards you twice for these victories: you receive the immediate in-run loot and also progress toward the "15 Bosses" milestone for that specific character. As you begin to unlock more basic relics through the score-based system, your overall power level and survivability will naturally increase. This makes it much safer to hunt Elites even as you move into higher Ascension
